HOW KINDNESS BUILDS CONNECTION AND RESILIENCE
Dirk DevosOur feelings are the driving force behind our ability to learn, grow, and change. Among them, caring emotions—such as kindness, compassion, empathy, and support—are some of the most powerful. They are contagious, uplifting the mood and energy of both individuals and groups. When present, caring emotions foster trust, safety, and collaboration, creating the foundation for strong relationships and resilient communities.
While care often arises spontaneously, it can also be a deliberate choice. By giving conscious attention to how we show up, we can nurture caring emotions in ourselves and in others, making them a consistent and intentional part of daily life. Choosing kindness is not weakness—it is a profound strength that connects us, builds resilience, and allows both individuals and teams to thrive.
As Mark Twain said: “Kindness is a language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.”
REFLECTING ON YOUR CARING EMOTIONS
If you want to grow in kindness and compassion, start by reflecting on how you experience these emotions today. On a scale of one to ten, how satisfied are you with the frequency and intensity of your caring emotions? Think about recent situations where you felt less connected to empathy or compassion—what was happening in those moments?
Now imagine increasing your score by just two points. What shift would you need to make to bring more care and kindness into your life? What kind of support, habits, or practices would help you sustain that shift? Self-reflection questions such as “I feel most caring when…” or “When I bring kindness forward, the difference I notice is…” can give you clarity on how to intentionally nurture your caring side.
HOW TO BRING OUT AND SUSTAIN CARING EMOTIONS
Caring emotions grow when we practice them regularly. Small daily actions—like listening fully, offering encouragement, or showing appreciation—have a ripple effect that strengthens both connection and trust. Before reacting, pause and ask yourself: “What’s the kind response here?”. This moment of awareness often shifts perspective and invites compassion.
Empathy is another key. By imagining what someone else is feeling, needing, or hoping for, you begin to respond not only from your mind but also from your heart. At the same time, remember that caring for others begins with caring for yourself. Without self-care, it becomes difficult to give authentic kindness to those around you.
To sustain caring emotions over time, surround yourself with people who embody empathy and kindness. Keep a gratitude journal to anchor positive feelings and relationships. Mindfulness practices can help you stay present and open-hearted, even in moments of stress. And when challenges arise, see them as opportunities to strengthen compassion rather than reasons to withdraw it.
As Leo Buscaglia beautifully put it: “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring—all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”
START LIVING YOUR CARING EMOTIONS
Caring emotions are not only powerful—they are transformative. When you choose kindness, compassion, and empathy deliberately, you create safety, deepen trust, and strengthen resilience in yourself and in others. They are the bridge that connects us and the root of authentic relationships.
Ask yourself: When do I feel most connected to my caring emotions, and how can I bring them forward more often?
