HOW TO BUILD BALANCE, RESILIENCE, AND WELL-BEING

Dirk Devos

On New Year’s Eve, we often wish our friends and loved ones good health—and with reason. Health is not just another priority; it is the very foundation of a fulfilling life. Without it, even the best intentions for growth, connection, and purpose become harder to sustain.

Good health is more than the absence of illness. It is an integrated balance of physical, mental, and emotional well-being. When the body is cared for, the mind becomes clearer, more resilient, and more capable of growth. When health is neglected, stress, fatigue, and emotional struggles multiply, sometimes leading to more serious conditions.

Looking after your body is one of the deepest acts of kindness toward yourself. It honors your needs, sustains your energy, and creates the basic foundation you need to show up fully for others.

As Jim Rohn put it: “Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.”

REFLECTING ON YOUR HEALTH

To begin improving your health, reflect on where you are today. On a scale of one to ten, how satisfied are you with your health? Imagine increasing that score by two points. What would you need to change to make that shift? And what would help you succeed and sustain it?

Think about your current health priorities. Is it movement, sleep, stress management, or nutrition? Journaling on prompts like “My current health level is…” or “The one area I most want to improve is…” can help clarify where to focus. By setting a health priority plan, you create direction and accountability for meaningful change.

HOW TO BUILD AND SUSTAIN A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Health is not about perfection but about consistency, compassion, and alignment. Even small actions, repeated daily, create a powerful impact over time.

Movement matters. Exercise doesn’t need to be extreme—a mindful walk, stretching, yoga, tai chi, or even dancing can release built-up stress and shift the body from tension into recovery. This transition from the stress response (sympathetic nervous system) to the recovery state (parasympathetic nervous system) is vital for balance, healing, and resilience.

Sleep is equally fundamental. Consistent, restorative rest is the foundation for recovery and mental clarity. Breathing practices, meditation, or mindfulness techniques help calm the mind and reset the body.

Nutrition plays a central role. Conscious eating—savoring your food, noticing hunger and fullness, and choosing nourishing foods—creates a direct connection between physical and emotional health. Staying hydrated is just as important: water fuels both body and brain.

And remember: health is not something you need to manage alone. Seeking support from medical professionals, coaches, or loved ones provides accountability and encouragement.

As Buddha said: “To keep the body in good health is a duty… otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.”
