HOW TO CONTRIBUTE WITH KINDNESS AND PURPOSE
Dirk DevosWe are not separate from the world—we are part of it. Our well-being, work, and relationships all connect to a larger ecosystem: our neighborhood, our organization, our culture, and ultimately, our planet.
Engaging consciously with society begins with an important question: What impact do I want to have beyond myself? The answer doesn’t always require grand gestures. Sometimes it lies in small, daily choices—kindness to a stranger, the way we consume and share resources, or how we show up in our civic or professional communities.
Living with awareness of society means balancing two truths. On one hand, we receive from society: safety, education, culture, opportunities. On the other, we contribute to society: through values-driven actions, service, and leadership. Kindness is at the center of this exchange. It is contagious, and when scaled, it creates trust, cooperation, and resilience in communities. Even modest actions ripple outward, influencing systems and shaping the kind of world we—and future generations—live in.
As Winston Churchill said: “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”
REFLECTING ON YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO SOCIETY
To understand your relationship with society, begin with reflection. On a scale of one to ten, how satisfied are you with the way you contribute? Think of one cause, community, or issue that deeply matters to you. What small, concrete actions could you take this month to make a difference?
Ask yourself how your purpose, values, and vision guide your contribution. Where do you already feel most connected to society, and where do you long to do more? Writing prompts such as “The contribution I am proud of is…” or “The contribution I long to make is…” can help you clarify the shifts you want to make.
HOW TO CONTRIBUTE TO SOCIETY WITH KINDNESS
Improving how you relate to society does not mean taking on the world — it means starting where you are. Support your local community, your neighborhood, or your colleagues. Align your contribution with your strengths so that your skills and passions meet real needs.
Practice everyday kindness. Small acts — listening, helping, volunteering — build trust and connection. Engage in dialogue, even around difficult issues, and approach others with openness. Be a role model by living your values visibly; consistency inspires others more than words alone.
Think also of sustainability. The way we consume, the habits we cultivate, and the choices we make shape the future for generations to come. By making conscious decisions, we strengthen not only our present society but also the legacy we leave behind. Collaboration amplifies this impact — joining or creating communities allows collective kindness and service to ripple further.
As Mother Teresa reminded us: “We cannot all do great things, but we can do small things with great love.”
START WITH ONE ACT OF KINDNESS
Society thrives when individuals choose to engage with awareness, compassion, and purpose. Your contribution does not have to be monumental — it can begin with one act of kindness, one thoughtful choice, one step of service. These choices ripple outward, influencing not only your own well-being but also the strength and resilience of your community.
Ask yourself: What is one act of kindness or service I can do this week to contribute positively to my society?
